Stepping Out of Religion into a Way of Life
Stepping Out of Religion into a Way of Life
What is the purpose of life? Life!
Do we dare to awaken, to open our senses and then open them again? Is it time to step out of religion and into a way of life?
What might it smell, look, feel, taste, and sound like if we chose to move through our days and nights daring to consciously live fully integrated lives? What would it be like if we chose to walk in a world where the mystical freely intermingles with the domestic? What would it be like to embrace the everyday magics of shaping-with, the multiversal secrets hidden in plain site, and the deep songs of life, death, and rebirth as if they were as plainly present in our lives as our own breath, the rhythm of our own beating hearts, the call of our own hungry bellies? What would it be like to live life as a fully conscious human being, celebrating ourselves as primal apes, as primates born of this sacred living planet, Eartha?
Let us explore these notions together through a Heathen lens using art, music, poetry, ritual, and conversation. Let us consciously choose to be informed by the lore, not ruled by lore.
May we all dare to dwell in beauty, balance, and delight!
Bless the Bees!
Bless the Bears!
Bless the Cherry Trees!

Dancing between Fire and Ice: an embodied exploration of polarities and beyond
Most Pagan traditions are Earth-based and celebrate the physical word. Our bodies are also part of this physical reality and yet, we live in an overculture that promotes numbing, dissociation and body shame. This movement ritual will draw from Reclaiming tradition, dance and movement practices, Authentic Movement, and somatic healing practices. In this ritual, we will be invited to come into deeper connection and intimacy with our bodies, not as vessels but as sacred, fully embodied beings. We will move according to our abilities, explore the polarities of fire and ice within ourselves, our relationship to them, and what happens when we move within and beyond these polarities. We will be invited to reflect our embodied sacred selves to each other, as we explore what it feels like to be in relationship with fire and ice as fully embodied beings.

Ritual Facilitation Intensive: Engaging Participation
The most potent rituals inspire and move us, and most of those do so by engaging attendees to participate in the ritual. The problem? Getting people to actually speak, move, dance, or sing! How do you get a group out of “audience” mode? How can you create a safe space where people are willing to get involved? Through discussion and hands-on practice, we’ll explore how to lead more magical rituals through exploring: Ritual structure and design, setting up the space and how event-planning issues impact participation, consent in ritual space, trance language and trance techniques, modeling, anchoring, ecstatic energy building, chanting, and other techniques to help create rituals of intensity, depth, and impact. *This workshop will be offered in an intensive format on Friday from 1pm-5pm. You’re welcome to bring food, or take a bathroom break, and you don’t need to stay the entire time. However, those attending the entire class will get the benefit of exploring more advanced ritual facilitation techniques.

Staving off Ragnarok
Some say the world will end in fire, some, in ice. Actually, if you look at Norse mythology, it will be both, when those giants who wield the unbalanced elemental forces battle the gods at Ragnarok. But when will that be? Many cultures, including Germanic, believe the earth has gone through many ages, but in cosmic terms, our Holocene Age, in which our current ecosystem,t our civilization and our religion evolved, has barely begun. The gods call us to fight for the earth now, so that Ragnarok will not come before its destined time.

Civilization/Savagery: The Binary that Influences Perceptions of Indigenous Peoples' Teachings
Since the time of "First Contact", Indigenous peoples have been positioned in a place of oppression from European explorers. The idea espoused by "thinkers" such as Amerigo Vespucci classified Indigenous peoples as lacking in moral character, having no redeeming qualities, and not worthy of attention and inherent human rights. Based of notions of "Civilization" and "Savagery", European ideas on Indigenous peoples still exist today, even within Pagan circles. This lecture will examine the binary of "Civilization" and "Savagery", how it influenced colonization and dehumanization of Indigenous peoples, and examine the effect of these things on Indigenous Spiritual Traditions.

A Panel on Paganistan: Contemporary Community in Minnesota’s Twin Cities
Panel Of Reviewers: Volkhvy, Penny Mixau, and Nels Linde. Respondent: Murphy Pizza, Ph.D
Here it is. You watched her work, were subjected to her analysis, the dissertation passed, the academic monograph came out – and it’s too expensive to buy. Lucky for you, not only is the book now available via inter-library loan from your local library (ahem! FREE!), but we have a panel of readers from the Pagan community to review and analyze her work for you.
Paganistan, based on and expanding Murphy’s dissertation, is an ethnography and critical analysis of community processes among the Pagans of Minnesota. While she has been getting good critical reviews in academic anthropological and religious studies journals, she has most been in need of feedback on her work the community who so generously allowed her to study them. These panelists have graciously agreed to do so. They will provide what they deem important critique for Murphy, and Murphy will respond to their insights and questions. If you have read Murphy’s book and wish to contribute feedback during Q&A, please do so! Attendees who haven’t read the book can come to hear what scholarship can provide to a community, what community can provide to scholarship – and learn of the remarkable history and contributions of the Twin Cities Pagans.

Hail the Holy Ancestors - an Ancestor ritual
Ancestor worship is known world wide and throughout time. Each group or religion has individual rituals to honor the dead gone before us. Heathenry is no different.  In this ritual, we will gather to honor the ancestors.  The alfar, or male ancestral dead, will be honored as well as the disir, the female ancestral dead. This ritual will most resemble a heathen blot from the Northeast region of the United States.

Practicing Safe Sects
What is a destructive cult? How does one operate and how is this different from a non-cult religious group? Why are such groups destructive to one's personal rights and liberties? Is it possible your group has red flags? What does critical thinking have to do with identifying and leaving such a group? In this talk, I will share my experiences in the Church of Scientology and what I learned about destructive cults after leaving this group, and how this information applies broadly to any sect or non-mainstream groups. I will also go over specific points of critical thinking that assist in dealing with and recovering from cultic experiences. This applies to anyone who is interested in not being conned or fooled or taken advantage of and also to group members who want to be in a safe environment to practice freely and openly.

For some, the Germanic god Odin is the Wanderer, for others, the leader of the Wild Hunt. For Wagner he was king of the gods, for Neil Gaiman he is Mr. Wednesday. Women in Heathenry: Story, Craft, and Lived Experience
Popular stereotypes of Heathenry or Asatru often call up images of bearded Viking warriors, but both the cosmology/mythology and the lived reality of today’s Heathens reveal multiple roles and spiritual pathways for people of all genders. In particular, many of our old stories feature strong women characters, which is mirrored in the strong women leaders in Heathenry both locally and nationally. This session will use storytelling, visual imagery, and traditional crafting to talk about the role of women in Old Norse mythology, cosmology, and society, and the lived experiences of women in Heathenry. Participants will have the opportunity to try spinning and card weaving, two of the traditional “women’s crafts” that are metaphors for Wyrd and Ørlög, central concepts within Heathen cosmology, which hold important teachings for deep healing.

Pagan Enough-The Dance Between Individualism and Community
The individual is made up of various parts: thoughts, feelings, actions, dreams, memories, and physiology. You could also say the individual is the personality, the genetics, the environment, and the history of the person. However, the whole is always more than the sum of its parts and we are all social beings who seek to belong, to find our relationship with “the group." We are all active participants in our lives striving to feel positively about ourselves.

Come join us for another lively discussion when we explore the dance of our individual selves and our parts as we seek connection and identity within the larger Pagan community. How do our past stories of being/feeling like an outsider expand and contract within community. Can we give time and space for the first ripple of our anxiety or depression to react with community, allowing healing to occur or does it flood our cauldron with explosive results? Does our identification with other communities (GLBTQ, PoC, Poly, Kinkster etc) impede our sense of safety or our ability to be seen?

Standing Stones
Stones ritual description: In the tale of primordial creation in Norse mythology, the realms of Fire (Muspelheim) and Ice (Nilfheim) meet in the great void that separates them (Ginnungagap), and from their meeting arises the giant Ymir, from whom the first man and woman were born, and from whose body the gods formed the world of humans.  Inspired by this tale, we seek to generate new energy and new life in the gap between the realms of Fire and Ice.  We will invoke the realms of Fire, Ice, and the Void that stands between them.  As fire and ice meet in the heart of the void, the unformed power of new life will arise to be woven into the forms we desire.  We will each pass through the gap, claim our power, and emerge into a new world, forever changed.

Pagan Prayer Books
The Conception and Construction of Pagan Prayer Books

A Bit of General History:
Illustrated Prayers have been a part of human culture for many millennia. They have been etched onto boulders and tomb stones. Illustrated Prayers have decorated cave, temple, city, and shrine walls. In the last few thousand years, they have been made into books, currently some of these volumes have taken on the name of ‘Pagan Prayer Books’.

My Persoanl History:
My history began with Pagan Prayer Plaques, then added Pagan Prayer Spell/Poems which became then Pagan Prayer Books.

How I Work:
When feeling the call to shape-with/co-create a Pagan Prayer Book, I first ask myself, “Who, what, and/or when is inspiring me?” I try to get as clear as I can be without becoming too rigid about the inspirations coming my way. I stay focused. I always keep the Heathen notion in mind when doing this work, “I am informed by the lore (story, message, inspiration, vision, song, etc.) I am not ruled by lore (story, message, inspiration, vision, song, etc.).”
I also keep myself open to noticing: when the images and verses become more than the sum of their parts … in other words I pay attention to when a series of images meld with a series of prayer/poems becoming richer and deeper in meaning than when they stand alone. I keep this focus in mind at all times.
I am often asked which comes first, the image or the prayer/poem? Sometimes the images come first. Sometimes the spell/poems come first. Sometimes, they come randomly until the work is finished.

Handmade or Pre-made?
I have found that the both prayer books made by and for the person using it, and a prayer book made for general usage can become a powerful part of a person’s daily (regular) practice. It has come to me that a centrally important feature for any prayer book, is that the text and images sing to you, speak directly to you, that the book and and its (human) partner share a vibration that feed each other, nurturing and nourishing each other’s well being and their work together in the worlds.
A prayer book can be as simple as a few pieces of paper folded together and stapled, an elaborately hand embroidered volume, or electronically printed multiples. There is no one right material and/or technique that must be used to make a lovely, functional Pagan Prayer Book.

Three of Examples:
               Seventeen Ancestral Heros
Eight Joyful Obligations Embraced by Grandmother Bear
               We Sail On

We Are Aradia - Empowerment Workshop & Ritual
#WeAreAradia reminds us: "These are the times we were made for." The Goddess Diana saw her people were suffering from tyranny. She sent her daughter Aradia to earth to teach us the secrets of witchcraft so that we could rise up. We don’t need a savior. We must save ourselves. We need to be the Witches the world needs.

This presentation will have two parts: first the workshop/discussion, followed by a ritual.  In the workshop section, we'll cover some history (ancient and modern), look at practical witchery (offensive and defensive), discuss resources and ideas to fortify your practice. In the ritual part, we will invoke Aradia to once again bring her wisdom to us - to protect, guide, and strengthen: to empower everyone who needs it. "For now as witches we all shall rise!"

•Learn tools and techniques for midwifing the dying

-Understand the differences between Policy and Law with the Funeral Industry

-The Funeral Industry and know what to look for in price gouging
•Consider family dynamics that occur as someone dies
•Experience the practice of dying; visioning our own death before we die

Healing Roots: Reconnecting to a healthy sense of cultural identity

People of the Entire Earth: Clearing Up Confusion About Pagan Cultural Adoption and Appropriation.
A peculiarly American preoccupation, and even more an American Pagan one, our attempts to adopt practices from both our mixed cultural heritages and those that surround us have resulted in a lot of confusion, finger-pointing, and accusations of “cultural appropriation”, “theft”, “ownership”, “Inheritance”, and “rights” for identifying with a cultural religion – often times unfounded, often times correct. This workshop – which means work, not simply discussion – will put you to task to engage with the definitions of cultural studies terminology, notions of identity, and hard questions that need to be addressed about what we Americans of mixed heritage who practice culturally-informed new religions actually have the right to, and what processes – syncretism, adaptation, appropriation, and healthy relationships – we need to understand better.

Creating Safe Communities - Abuse, Predation, Coercion, and Addressing Complaints Ethically
How do we, as a community, evaluate and make decisions around allegations of toxic or predatory people, groups, or traditions? What defines toxic or predatory? Do allegations automatically equate to “guilty”? How can we create safety for our members? What processes do other faith communities use and are the applicable to us? How do social media and the court of public opinion shape our current processes for better or worse? And how do we avoid victim shaming while recognizing the phenomenon of mass hysteria?

Once again, Paganicon favorites EmrysAnu and Mark Reese bring the hard conversations to the Playground, this time with a star studded panel of experts. Together we’ll explore the questions above, hear from Paganicon attendees, and continue the work of creating safer spaces for our community.

Emrys Anu - Inadvertently poised in the eye of the storm, EmrysAnu headed the investigation into a recent high profile and provocative case of alleged misconduct in our community. She grew up in a Catholic cult, lived with a Scientologist for seven years, was attacked by the Church of Scientology, and currently teaches and writes on the topics of critical thinking and cult awareness. EmrysAnu has been an active member in Paganistan since 2002 and holds a third degree in two traditions. She is a member of the Coven of Misfit Toys and serves on the Executive Board for the Wiccan Church of Minnesota.

Mark Reese - Mark is a licensed marriage and family therapist with a private practice in St. Louis Park, MN and a researcher at the University of Minnesota. He has a special focus on healing from trauma and has presented on mental health challenges and healing strategies for the Pagan community at several prior Paganicons. Mark has been involved in the local pagan community since 2000 and holds a third degree in two local traditions. He is a member of Earth Conclave and Paganistan Reclaiming.

Chris Shelton - Chris was a member of the Church of Scientology for 27 years the last couple right here in the Twin Cities. He appeared in the first season of Leah Remini’s Emmy award winning docu-series “Scientology and the Aftermath” as an expert guest. After escaping from Scientology he spent the last several years educating on cultic and abusive behaviors in organizations and relationships, undue influence, and how important critical thinking is in creating safety. His youtube channel has helped millions of people from all walks of life. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCF326xyA0QHI7Z5xAwKQDJg https://mncriticalthinking.com/

Moderated by Cara Schulz - Cara is a Senior Writer for The Wild Hunt, a news organization covering topics of interest for the Pagan community. She has reported on many controversial stories involving allegations of criminal and/or predatory behavior within the Pagan community.

Gnostic Mass
Paganicon 2018’s theme is Fire and Ice, and at least one way to interpret this focus is the joining of absolute opposites. With this in mind, Leaping Laughter Oasis, O.T.O., offers a presentation of the Gnostic Mass for Paganicon.

Aleister Crowley wrote the script for the Gnostic Mass — which we often call Liber XV (Book 15) — in 1913 while travelling in Russia. It isn’t surprising, then, that the overall structure is similar to the Mass of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Its purpose, however has been updated to apply to the Aeon of the Crowned and Conquering Child and is focused on the same union on opposites as this conference. It also calls forth many of the principles of Thelema.

It is the central rite of Ordo Templi Orientis and its ecclesiastical arm, Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica. The ceremony calls for five officers: a Priest, a Priestess, a Deacon, and two acolytes. The end of the ritual culminates in the consumption of the Eucharist, consisting of a goblet of wine and a Cake of Light, after which the congregant proclaims “There is no part of me that is not of the gods!”

Palmistry as portal
As our hands conduct our energy to the world, they record the flow of our mind, heart, and physical energy, and this map offers a window into how a person reacts to the slings and arrows of fortune, where they have unused potential, and what might bring their life into balance. Palmistry’s practical, teachable map can act as scaffolding for our compassionate intuition. In this orientation we’ll cover the lines, shapes, proportion and how to approach the hand with outer and inner eyes, and practice upon one another. Bring your hands.

Whither Young Adult Pagans
Paganistan is blessed with so many Pagans in their late teens and twenties who have been Pagans all their lives - often longer than the Elders that they are supposed to look up to. Yet why should they feel drawn to the old ways of doing things when they are dismissed as irrelevant and untrained, and why should they seek to emulate Elders who in many cases have not proved to be good role models?
I invite all Pagans in their late teens and twenties to come together for a discussion on how to form a proud, self-confident, and cohesive group, with its own rules, requirements, and responsibilities for the 21st century, with the aim of also providing guidance and role models for the younger Pagans coming up under them. You are the future of Paganistan. What is that going to look like? What should ritual look like? What should be included, and what discarded, under your stewardship, and why?
Older adults are welcome to share their thoughts, and listen to the discussion, but this is open mic time for 2nd and 3rd generation young adult pagans to (finally?) speak up and be heard, and lay the foundations for the path into the future.
No divisiveness - no gossip - no negativity - just good positive and passionate energies requested. If you have ever felt the need for a forum to speak out without being criticized, this is it.

Alexandria Reborn: Pagans and Polytheists in a Multicultural Society
More ethnically diverse than New York. A greater center of learning than Oxford or Cambridge. Cutting-edge technology, science, and the best schools of Western philosophy and religion rivaling Athens and Rome. Pagans, Christians, Jews, and others practicing their religions peacefully together, not only in the same neighborhoods, but sometimes even the same temples. Alexandria, Egypt was a massive, successful city: a shining multicultural gem on the northern shore of Africa for more than ten centuries. What can modern pagans and polytheists learn from the Alexandrian example? What parts of the Alexandrian legacy remain with us, in fact and legend, and what parts can we rediscover as we, too, find ourselves citizens in a multicultural global village?

Creating Affirming Goddess Spirituality Spaces
The presence of trans exclusionary feminists (TERFs), as well as the cisnormative and heteronormative nature of much Goddess literature and liturgy, often makes Goddess Spirituality spaces and communities unwelcoming and even hostile or dangerous for trans women, nonbinary femmes, and anyone else who is not a cisgender woman. This session explores ways in which we can co-create a Goddess Spirituality (aka "Feminist Spirituality") that not only includes but welcomes and affirms a diversity of gender identities. Drawing on the Dr. Harper's own experiences as a cisgender facilitator of woman- and femme-centric Goddess Spirituality spaces, and the collaborations she has made with trans and nonbinary members of her community, this session will discuss ways in which cisgender ritual facilitators and teachers can ensure that they create spaces and materials that welcome and affirm all those who find their homes in Goddess Spirituality spaces. We will also discuss ways in which ritual and thealogy can be co-created to move Goddess Spirituality beyond its historically cis- and heteronormative past, enabling it to become a site for healing, growth, and empowerment for all.

The Magic of Conflict: Trauma-Informed Conflict Engagement
We all hold deep hurt and trauma, from complex past abuse to historical and genetic trauma, from acute trauma to secondary trauma from our work as caregivers. We in the Pagan community may have trauma specific to our relationships with the spiritual communities of our past or our families. Trauma has many forms and shows up in many ways in our bodies, minds, and souls, from chronic muscle tension and stress/anxiety to deep and abiding malaise.

Trauma can also show up in many ways in the way that we interact with each other, often in ways we do not intend. Those ways may be explosive and violently defensive, or they may be numb as we retract protectively. We may make assumptions based on our past trauma experiences; our reactions may be grounded in emotional flashbacks. In a conflict, this can result in further friction even when we are trying to engage in conflict resolution openly.

With Trauma-Informed Conflict Engagement, we create spaces that acknowledge our trauma stories, that create structure for self-care during conflict engagement, that ensure openings to speak about stress and our emotions, and that respect our dignity. We want to create an environment that fosters open relations and the ability to engage freely and safely about our conflicts.

This discussion will tap into the knowledge of all those present to reach the heart of how we can nurture trauma-aware communities where conflict is addressed and not feared.

Self Publishing for Pagans

Do you have a book that you believe is amazing? Does self publishing intrigue you?

There are currently a ton of tools out there to help you publish your own book, but none of them inform you about the ins and outs of self-publishing or how to be successful at it.

When you take this workshop, you will not only learn how to self-publish a book (including learning about all of the different platforms), but we will help you set attainable goals, show you how you should set up your branding, what to do during dreaded tax season, figure out if you need a barcode or ISBN, how to market your book, and much more.

We also talk about some of the unique challenges that Pagan authors can face.

Self-Publishing your work can be very intimidating, but the rewards in the end are worth it.

Birthing Healthy Covens: Thriving with Purpose
Forming a healthy, vibrant coven (or any spiritual group) that promotes growth and evolution of individuals and the group is never as easy as people think it is going to be. The proper preparation - on all levels - can truly increase the odds that your group will thrive long-term. Lasting only matters, though, if the purpose and practice of the group is meaningful and serves to evolve its members - and that has to be developed from the very beginning.

We will discuss creation of the thought-form, seeding the group mind, developing guiding principles and practices, creating core traditions, successful leadership structures, calling for patrons, and what to expect in the first couple years (the good, bad, and ugly). You will learn a structured approach that works - from the beginning or as 'rehab' for a struggling group - while fostering the creativity needed to grow spiritual development.

While I will present from the context of a wiccan coven (a consistent framework helps every presentation), most of what is going to be shared truly can be adapted to nearly any kind of group with a spiritual focus. And I'm more than happy to help you do that, if desired.

Bringing Earth Religions Back to Earth: A Historical and Critical Call to Rid Paganism Again of Fantasy, Pseudo-Science, Conspiracy Theories, Immature Theologies, and Other Ridiculous Substitutes for Knowledge.
The first writings, teachings, and cultural/legal victories in our communities came at a time when the general public, filled with fantasy-laden superstitious beliefs, accused us of being dangerous – to which we responded with evidence that we were Earth-reverent, natural people, not reared on fantasy and popular culture, and we presented the earliest sophisticated attempts at contemporary theologies created by modern people enculturated in science, gnosis, and contemporary cultural studies. Recently, this has been shelved in favor of arguing for the importance of conspiracy theories, cosplay, popular culture, and fantasy fiction to inform Pagan identity and practice, -- and now the general public is rightly accusing *us* of being loaded down with superstition, sci-fi scenarios, and an unwillingness to grow up and face reality. This is a growing culture-wide problem.
Those of us who joined Paganism back when it was a collection of religions that engaged intellectual rigor, realistic relationships with the world, and genuine experiential knowledge miss the days of when it was a path that rebelled against blind faith, belief in superstitions, and theological control. Murphy will provide an initial historical presentation of this cultural shift and its components, then open it up to a vigorous critical discussion to generate solutions to help prevent Paganism’s descent into superstitious silliness, and restore its appeal as a mature collection of religions. In short, leave the dragons and sci-fi scenarios for playtime – it’s time to deal with the real, truly magical world as Earth people again.

Invoking our American Ancestors

In most traditional cultures, the ancestors and heroes are honored as guardians of the living. In Wicca we have the Mighty Dead and in Heathenry the altar and disir. In America, the monuments on the Capitol Mall honor some of those who set forth the ideals of liberty, equality and justice for all in this land. For over two centuries, other heroes and heroines have worked to expand and apply those ideals and understand what they truly mean. They were not perfect—neither are we— but they wait to work with us to defend the rights they fought for. In this ritual we will call on them and invoke their inspiration and their power.

How to work with ancestors, spirits and guides in the age of technology.
Just as we can use science to help explain some magickal phenomena, we can use technology to help us experience that magick. Grith and Frith - Boundary Setting in Nordic ways
Grith and Frith - Boundary Setting in Nordic ways
Drawing clear boundaries for ourselves is extremely important whether we are working with gods, spirits, ancestors, community members, or our own family of origin. The Old Norse words and runes Grith and Frith, Utgård and Ingård, Nauthiz, Gifu, and Mannaz teach us about healthy boundary setting and community building.

In this workshop we will deepen our understanding of these concepts by working with two tools I call the Garden Fence and the Tree Within. These tools help us recognize, organize, and speak our truth in a healing way. They help us listen and hear other people's truth without personalizing it. They help us remain in our bodies when we are emotionally triggered and give us a framework to stay safe. I will hand out worksheets for each tool. Bring something to write with and extra paper for note taking.

An Introduction to Filianism: Approaching God as Mother
It has become increasingly accepted that the original form in which humanity conceived God was feminine. In some corners such traditions have come down to the present day, but in most of the world, and particularly the West, they have been lost, and there is now a great seeking for them again. The Goddess spirituality movement, modern Paganism, depth psychology, neo-Gnosticism, and a dozen like upswellings attest to this widespread desire to once more embrace God as Mother.

Amidst the intellectual ferment of 1970s Oxford, a small group of women students, deeply immersed in Greek and Roman classics, Roman Catholic Marian devotion, British feminist Witchcraft, Shakta Hinduism, Guénonian Traditionalism, and the work of Marija Gimbutas, articulated teachings which they saw as the interpretive key to this vast diversity of doctrines—a simple, pure devotion to Our Mother God which has come to be called Filianism, and which can now be found among scattered devotees throughout the English-speaking world.

In this presentation, you will hear the history of a movement that influenced the Fellowship of Isis, inspired the (in)famous lesbian subculture of Aristasia, and disproved Ronald Hutton's thesis that Wicca is "the only religion which England has ever given the world". More importantly, you will also become acquainted with the beauty of its Scriptures, the ingenuity of its synthesis of Abrahamic, Pagan, and Dharmic thought, and the potential of its teaching to respond to the environmental, political, and social challenges of our own time.
